Career
Born in Norwich, Connecticut, Sholes learned printing and eventually went to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he got a newspaper started. From there, Sholes moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin. In addition to serving as Mayor of Kenosha, Sholes served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1855, where he was the speaker and he also served in the Wisconsin State Senate in 1866-1867.
