(Noted theologian C.H. Dodd, Professor Emeritus of Divinit...)
Noted theologian C.H. Dodd, Professor Emeritus of Divinity at the University of Cambridge, England, states in his Foreword to the first edition that this book is based upon the course of Shaffer Lectures given at the Divinity School, Yale University, in the United States. First published in 1935, it was reprinted in a revised edition in 1936, 1938, and nearly every year (or two) for several decades after. Chock full of biblical scholarship with analysis of specific scriptures, phrases and words, Professor Dodd's book has been a valued resource for clergy and laity alike across multiple generations, not only for its wisdom and clarity, but for its relevance as well.

(So the people of ancient Saionica judged two men who came...)
So the people of ancient Saionica judged two men who came proclaiming the Christian Way to a pagan society. By happy fortune, one of the two revolutionaries has survived in his writings, and we are in a position to learn at first-hand how Paul of Tarsus, artisan, scholar, traveller, leader of men, carried out into that imperial world the gospel that had transformed his own life, interpreting it in daring and vivid terms to the mind of his time. A gospel so deeply personal and so widely human can survive the intellectual vicissitudes of centuries, and bear re-interpretation for a new age without losing its vital force. In this little book I have made some attempt to suggest the place of Paul in the history of religion ;but I have been more particularly concerned to bring out what I conceive to be the permanent significance of the apostles thought, in modern terms, and in relation to the general interests and problems which occupy the mind of our generation. I find in Paul a religious philosophy of life orientated throughout to the idea of a society or common wealth of God. Such a philosophy finds ready contact with the dominant concerns of our own day. The basis of this study is the Pauline (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) theologian university professor
Dodd was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales, the brother of the historian A. H. Dodd.
He studied classics at University College, Oxford, from 1902.
He is known for promoting "realized eschatology", the belief that Jesus" references to the kingdom of God meant a present reality rather than a future apocalypse. After graduating in 1906 he spent a year in Berlin, where he was influenced by Adolf Harnack. He was a Congregationalist minister for three years in Warwick, after being ordained in 1912, before going into academia.
From 1915 he was Yates Lecturer in New Testament at Oxford.
He became Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the Victoria University of Manchester in 1930. He was Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge from 1935, becoming emeritus in 1949.
His students from Cambridge include David Daube and West. Doctorate. Davies. The three together, each through his own work, ushered in changes in New Testament studies that led to the New Perspective on Paul and the scholarship of Davies"s student, East. P. Sanders.
He directed the work of the New English Bible translators, from 1950.
Dodd died in Goring-on-Thames. Dodd"s daughter Rachel married the Old Testament scholar Review East. West. Heaton in 1951.
