This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Not illustrated.1848 Excerpt: ... N the Conqueror's survey, Northampton is described as having contained at the time of King Edward the Confessor sixty burgesses, with as many dwellings in but when the account was completed in 1086, fourteen of the latter were set down as lying waste, and the remainder, with forty burgesses, were in the possession of the crown. There were in the town altogether two hundred and twenty-five houses, valued at £10. 11. Id. a the royal demesne; 2 COXQDERORSSURVEY. year, being a fraction less than a shilling each. The Record states that the burgesses of Hantone (Northampton) rendered annually to the sheriff £30. 10. This belonged to the farm; and the Countess Judith, William's kinswoman, had seven pounds out of the issues of the said borough. In examining this extract it appears that there were at the earliest known period, sixty burgesses within the royal demesne, having as many houses, and since the houses and their occupants are both mentioned in immediate connexion with each other, it may be justly inferred that the burgesses themselves were anciently householders. No persons having the former appellation are named in conjunction with the other dwellings, and therefore those dwellings we may suppose to have been tenanted by strangers, religious persons, females, agricultural labourers, bondmen, or by those who from poverty were unable to pay their share of the common expenses, and who consequently were not entitled to rank as burgesses. " Nothing has occurred," says one of the best investigators of the subject, "down to the present time, to alter the class or description of persons who at the close of the Saxon dynasty were called burgesses/' and it is to these early times therefore that we must direct EARLY STATE OF FREEMEN. our researches for a tr...

(Excerpt from The Book Rarities in the University of Cambr...)
Excerpt from The Book Rarities in the University of Cambridge: Illustrated by Original It is also probable that some few books have been passed over, whose rarity would have entitled them to a place in the volume; but more are there which have been left undescribed from a fear of extending it to too large a size, Aldines, for instance, in the Libraries at St John's and Trinity, which were purposely excluded to make room for better company. It was found that a notice, or even a slight catalogue, of the most remarkable Manuscripts would have been too extensive a field to have entered upon, and (unless some have slipped by chance into the press along with other matter) they have been passed over. As they have already found a place in the Catalogus Manuscriptorum Angliæ, their notice here would have been only a repetition of their titles with a slight enlargement That the greatest part of the matter of the work was written some time since will account to the reader for observations which have been made concerning the Library of King's College, and that of the late learned and estimable Earl of Guilford; The one then was placed in the Chapel Cloisters, but has since been removed to the New Library. Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

It is represented in Stothard, pi. 61. (Consult Meyrick, vol. i. p. 166.) The Aventaille was a plate that protected the face, having openings in it. The same object was also attained by a closed helmet with merely an Ocularium to look through. There is a fine specimen of this kind in the Hastilude Chamber at Goodrich Court. 1 In the Effigy of Robert, Earl of Clermont, one of the beautiful etchings by the late Mr Kerrich, which were the model followed by Stothard, but not equalled by him, we see the hauberk in folds round the neck. The earliest kind of head-piece was the Coif de Mailles; after this in due succession came the Chapelle de fer; then the Bascinet; then the Salade whose characteristic mark is the projection behind. The Salade or Sallet, had sometimes a moveable vizor (Lat. video). The Bascinet had a VentaiUe, Baviere, and Visor, attached to it, and removable at pleasure. The Helmet was seldom used except at the The first important change observable in the equipment of a warrior, consists in the admixture of plate with chain armour. The use of mail gradually became less, until it ceased to be worn, except at those parts where freedom of action for the limbs, and for the bending of the body, was essential. The expence also of mail might in great measure have hastened its disuse. In the brass of Sir John de Creke (1324), in the church of Westley-Waterless, co. Cambridge, we find the front of the arms covered with plate, instead of mail; and the gauntlets no longer entire, but divided into fingers. Sometimes we see the knuckles ornamented with gads or gadlings. The Hauberk is shorter, and bears the name ...

Born at Broseley in Shropshire on 17 March 1802, he was the only child of John Hartshorne, an ironmaster. in 1828. He travelled through Italy and made a tour in the Levant. In 1826 he returned to England.
John Bulletin hinted over two of its issues at the idea that the relationship of Heber and Hartshorne was homosexual.
Heber had abruptly left the country. Hartshorne pursued John Bulletin successfully through the courts.
Hartshorne had thought of applying to work at the British Museum, but after the scandal had little choice of career. In 1827 he followed early advice from James Alan Park, and was ordained.
Hartshorne was curate at Benthall, Shropshire, from 1825 to 1828, and from 1828 to 1836 at Little Wenlock.
After two years at Leamington he took charge of the parish of Cogenhoe, Northamptonshire, from 1838 till 1850, when he was presented by the crown to the rectory of Holdenby in the same county. He was honorary chaplain to the seventh and eighth Dukes of Bedford, and fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He died suddenly at Holdenby on 11 March 1865.
In 1828 Hartshorne married Frances Margaretta, younger daughter of the Review
Thomas Kerrich.
