In 1930, Kuhn joined the Harvard faculty. In addition to teaching, he was named director of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, which was dedicated to the study and artworks of Germanic countries. His academic career was interrupted by military service in the Second World War.
At war"s end, he returned to teach at Harvard.
Lieutenant Commander Charles Kuhn was activated from the United States Naval Reserve (United States Naval Reserve) during the Second World War.
