Charles Mungoshi was born on December 2, 1947 in Zimbabwe. He was a son of Tongayi Davidson, a farmer, and Phoebe Masoka Mungoshi, a farmer.
Charles Mungoshi attended St. Augustine’s Mission in Penhalonga, Zimbabwe. In 1966 he completed O level at the Cambridge University.
From 1967 to 1969 Charles Mungoshi was a research assistant of the Rhodesian Forestry Commission at the Forest Research Station. From 1969 to 1974 he was a junior invoicing clerk at the Textbook Sales, booksellers, in Harare, Zimbabwe. From 1981 to 1985 Mungoshi was a literary editor at the Zimbabwe Publishing House, Harare and was appointed a creative writing editor in 1987. Mungoshi was an assistant literary editor at the Literature Bureau in Harare from 1981 to 1985. he served as a writer-in-residence at the University of Zimbabwe from 1985 to 1987.
In 1971 Charles Mungoshi became an actor in radio plays and on Zimbabwe Television’s Local Drama Programme in 1985. He was a participant in seminars and conferences for various groups, including UNESCO, London and Togo, Zimbabwe International Book Fair, Cultural Workers of Southern Africa, Botswana, British Council, Cambridge, and New Zealand Arts Festival, Wellington.
