Christian Edward Detmold was born on February 2, 1810 in Hanover, Germany. He was the son of Johann Detmold, a practising physician.
Detmold was educated at a military academy in Hanover.
At the age of sixteen Detmold came to the United States on his way to Brazil to enter the army there. Unsettled conditions in Brazil at that time, however, deterred him, and he remained in the United States. Shortly after his arrival he went to Charleston, South Carolina, and established himself as a surveyor.
His first major work was in making the surveys for the projected railroad of the newly organized Charleston & Hamburg Railroad & Canal Company. Upon completing this in 1830, he competed for and won a five hundred dollar prize offered by the railroad company for the best locomotive operated by horse-power.
Detmold’s mechanism, consisting of a horse treadmill mounted on a four-wheel car, carried twelve passengers at a speed of twelve miles an hour. After remaining in Charleston a few years longer, Detmold in 1833-34 was in the employ of the United States War Department and superintended the laying of the foundation of Fort Sumter.
During the succeeding ten years he was engaged in railroad survey work on various projected roads in the East, after which he became interested in the manufacture of iron and from 1845 to 1852 was engaged in this business in Maryland.
The success of the great industrial exposition held in London in 1851 brought about the agitation for a similar exposition to be held in New York. As a result, on January 3, 1852, the municipal authorities of New York granted a site for a building to be erected on Reservoir Square at Sixth Avenue, between Forty-first and Forty-second Sts. , and two months later the state legislature granted a charter for the “Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations. ”
In granting the lease the authorities stipulated that the building should be constructed of iron and glass. Because of his interest in the project and his reputation as an engineer, Detmold was made supervising architect and engineer and he, in turn, appointed as consulting engineer Horatio Allen, with whom he had been associated on the Charleston Railroad. The opening of the great Crystal Palace of New York City took place on July 14, 1833, the opening address being made by President Pierce. Following this work Detmold spent a number of years traveling in Europe and upon his return to the United States became interested to a considerable extent in various manufactories.
Failing health, however, compelled him to return to Europe where he remained, residing in Paris, until a few years before his death when he again returned to New York where he died.
