He took his education at Kristiania Technical School and the Technical University of Berlin, graduating from the latter in 1882. He was then an assistant of Johannes Otzen to 1885. After a stay in Kristiania, Fürst returned to Berlin to study at the now-defunct Königliche Akademie der Künste from 1889 to 1891.
He was also an assistant of Paul Wallot until 1892, when he returned to Norway.
Among his notable works are the Trinity Church in Arendal, Sagene church and Tostrupgården (Tostrup Yard), a monumental business premises on Karl Johans Gate in Oslo, the latter built 1896-1898 in a cooperation with Waldemar Hansteen and Torolf Prytz. He also participated in the rebuilding of Ålesund following the 1904 Ålesund Fire.
