He obtained his bachelor"s degree with quotation from the New York State College of Forestry in 1925, his Master of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1926, and his doctorate in 1934. (She died in 1962) He went to the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he taught botany beginning in 1944. He served as an adviser to several industries, including oil, paper and wood fiber.
Member of numerous scientific societies, he was appointed president of honour of the 78º extraordinary session of the Société Botanique of France.
