Hawaii, 1933-1936; scholarship student with Roger Sessions, New York City, 1937-1938; fellowship student under Frederick Jacobi, Juilliard Graduate School, 1938-1941; fellowship student under Aaron Copland, Berkshire Music Center, summer 1941; Master of Arts under Otto Luening, Columbia University, 1951.
His Symphony No. 2 was runner up for the 1952. He composed six operas, the music for the Broadway comedy Teahouse of the August Moon, a ballet, a ballet suite, two symphonies, a Polynesian suite, a dance piece and a concerto grosso for strings, a string quartet, orchestral songs, choral works and piano pieces. Joan Field premiered his violin concerto.
Served with Army of the United States, 1942-1945, PTO. Member American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, League Composers, Allied MacDowell Club, Dramatists Guild.
