She has served three terms as the court"s Chief Justice (2000–2003, 2006–2009, 2012–2015). She was the first woman appointed to the Alaska Supreme Court and the Alaska Supreme Court"s first female Chief Justice. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, she grew up in the city"s Hyde Park neighborhood and attended The Seven Hills School.
She attended Cornell University (Bachelor 1973) and Northeastern University School of Law (Juris Doctor 1976), before moving to Alaska in the 1970s.
Following the retirement of United States. Supreme Court Justice David Souter, United States. Senator Mark Begich recommended her as a possible successor in a letter to President Barack Obama.
