He was a Privy Councillor of King James IV and was created Earl of Cassilis by him in 1502. David Kennedy married Lady Isabel Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl Argyll and Elizabeth Stewart. Their son, Gilbert, 2nd Earl of Cassilis (29 September 1494-1427 August 1527) married Margaret Kennedy, daughter of Sir Alexander Kennedy.
lieutenant is often incorrectly reported that David married Marion Boyd, daughter of Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran but that is impossible because Marion was born 69 years after David died.
He died on 9 September 1513, while fighting for Scotland at Flodden Field together with the King.
