Abhijit was born to famous Indian classical vocalist Pandit Ajay Pohankar. He is the grandson of Doctor Susheela Pohankar of the Kirana Gharana.

He plays classical music on the keyboard. He learned for some time with santoor maestro Pt Shivkumar Sharma.Abhijit was the first artist to play Indian classical ragas on the keyboard.Besides playing classical music on the keyboard he is considered to be amongst the top most Fusion Music performers and producers in India. His album "Piya bawari" was a trendsetter in this genre of music after which a plethora of artists of his generation followed this path.He has performed in more than 2000 concerts of Fusion Music and Indian classical music around the world in the span of 18 years.
The year 2017 will complete two decades of his career.
After playing classical music on a keyboard, he started venturing into world music and fusion music His biggest album was Piya Bawari with his father Ajay Pohankar, and in that album he experimented with classical music fused with lounge music
He is one of the most successful fusion music producers. His latest project/band is called Panch Tatva and also Urban Sufis where he experiments with Sufi Music and electronica.
He has done major collaborative concerts with artists including Ajay Pohankar, Ghulam Ali (Pakistan), Hariharan, Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Anup Jalota, Pankaj Udhas, Vishwamohan Bhatt, and Sonal Mansingh.
He has also composed the title track of the 2003 film Boom, by Kaizad Gusted and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Bo-Derek.
