He was born in Trondhjem as a son of Nicolai Bredo Stabell (1736–1817) and Karen Bolette Grøgaard (1769–1832).

He edited the newspaper Morgenbladet from 1831 to 1857. He was elected to the Parliament of Norway from Akershus Amt in 1844, and was re-elected in 1847, 1850, 1853 and 1856. From 1848 he had served as President of the Odelsting.
He co-founded Akers Sparebank in 1842, chairing it from 1846 to 1865, and in 1858 he co-founded Den norske Creditbank which he led from 1858.
