Albín Brunovský was born on December 25, 1935 in Zohor, Malacky, Bratislava, Slovakia.
From 1951 until 1955 Albin Brunovský studied at the School of Art. From 1955 to 1961, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava under Professor Vincent Hložník. This teacher was known for his humanist perspective, and students were often inspired by Francisco Goya’s The Disasters of War, a multi-plate print series of visual protest against the violence of the 1808 Dos de Mayo Uprising. It was also used as a model for work.
Brunovsky himself lectured at Academy of Fine Arts and Design from 1966 to 1990. In 1981 he was appointed professor, since 1989 he has been the rector of the Academy.
In his early works Brunovsky showed surrealist tendencies - defined as a tendency to individualism and the absurdity of a free subconscious. Later his work became more evaluative and critical of human being in relation to himself and society.
The characteristic features of Albin Brunovsky's works are the combination of fantasy and real elements. He was a painter with a wide range of free graphics techniques, as well as fine graphics such as exlibris, postage stamps and banknotes. He created illustrations, for example, for Slovak editions of literary works by Nikolaj Vasiljevic Gogol, Miguel de Cervantes, Hans Christian Andersen or Auguste Villiers de l'Isle Adam.
Albin Brunovský illustrated over 100 book titles. He held over 100 individual exhibitions and took part in many international exhibitions. He won many prizes at home and abroad such as the Biennial of Graphic Art Ex-Aequo Prize, Lugano, the Biennial of Graphic Art Prize, Krakow,Otrano d’Argento Prize, Fillotrano, Herder Award, Wien, the Biennial of Ex-libris Gold Medal, Malbork, the Intergrafik Prize, Berlin, the International Ex-libris Competition First Prize, Pescara.

Quotations: "I have such a creative program that pushes me to work. My pictures are simply doing with me what they want. Sometimes I don't feel like working. But when I come to my studio and I notice, that one work is not ready and the other one hopeless, I go and sit next to them for a while and suddenly I realise that there is evening. And in this way every morning I let myself to be pleasantly abused by my paintings that allow me to dream."
