Kops then studied German at Leiden University between 2004 and 2009.
He succeeded Marcel de Graaff, who was elected to the European Parliament. In 2003 he obtained his propaedeutics as a German language teacher at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. He started as a teacher of German at a high school in Leiderdorp in 2008.
In 2010 he stood candidate for the Party for Freedom in the House of Representatives elections, as he was number 27 on the list he was not chosen.
His contract at the high school was not renewed. In early 2011 he started as a policy worker for the Party for Freedom at the European Parliament.
In the 2015 Senate elections he held place fourteen on the Party for Freedom list, the party gained nine seats and Kops was elected on the base of preference votes. He gained the most votes of any Party for Freedom candidate.
On 1 July 2014 he ended his contract there, and on 8 July he was made member of the Dutch Senate.
