Alexey Zubov was a Russian etcher, engraver and painter. He was famous for his etching of important events, people and monuments.
Background
Alexey Zubov was born in 1682 in Moscow, Russian Federation. He was the son of Fyodor Zubov, a prominent master of the iconography, the monumental painting and book miniature, who worked together with S. F. Ushakov in the Kremlin Armoury. He also had a brother, Ivan, who became an engraver.
Education
Alexey Zubov studied icon painting at the Kremlin Armoury from 1695 - 1699. Later, his teacher was the Dutch master Adrian Schoonebek, who taught the young artist the techniques of etching, engraving and the "black style" (mezzotint). In these techniques, Zubov worked sometimes combining them.
Career
In 1699 - 1710, Alexey Zubov worked in the engraving department of the Kremlin Armoury. From 1711 to 1727, Alexey Zubov headed the engraving workshop at the St. Petersburg Printing Office. In 1728 - 1729, he worked in the Engraving Chamber of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences of Russia on a piecework basis. At the end of 1729, he moved to Moscow, where Zubov executed orders of individuals and the Synodal Printing Office. From 1744 was in the service in Collegium of Manufacturing, making the official seal for stamped paper. He died in poverty, forgotten, the exact date of his death and place of burial unknown.
