Edersheim was born in Vienna of Jewish parents of culture and wealth. His father suffered illness and financial reversals before Alfred could complete his university education, and he had to support himself.

(Alfred Edersheim was a Jewish convert to Christianity who...)
Alfred Edersheim was a Jewish convert to Christianity who wrote a massive multi-volume tome on the history of the Bible. From the preface: "THE history of Israel as a nation may be said to commence with their entrance into their own land. All previous to this - from the Paschal night on which Israel was born as a people to the overthrow of Sihon and of Og, the last who would have barred Israel's way to their home - had been only preparatory. During the forty years' wanderings the people had, so to speak, been welded together by the strong hand of Jehovah. But now, when the Lion of Judah couched by the banks of Jordan, Israel was face to face with its grand mission, and the grand task of its national life commenced: to dispossess heathenism, and to plant in its stead the kingdom of God (Psalm 80:8-11), which was destined to strike root and to grow, till, in the fullness of time, it would extend to all nations of the world. * * Comp. such a Missionary Psalm as the 87th; also such passages as Psalm 96:9; Isaiah 44:5. Accordingly, when the camp of Israel was pitched at Shittim, a new period commenced. Its history records, first, certain events which had to take place immediately before entering the Land of Promise; next, the conquest, and then the apportionment of the land among the tribes of Israel; and, lastly, in the time of the Judges, side by side, the unfolding of Israel's religious and national condition, and the assertion of those fundamental principles which underlay its very existence as a God-called people. These principles are: - The special relationship of Israel as the people of God towards Jehovah, and Jehovah's special dealings towards them as their King. * * Some modern negative critics have even broached the theory - of course, wholly unfounded - that originally the Book of Joshua had formed with the five books of Moses Hexateuch. The history of the wilderness period had, indeed, been shaped by this two-fold relationship, but its consequences appeared more clearly under Joshua, and most fully in the time of the Judges. When not only Moses, but Joshua, and even the elders who had been his contemporaries had passed away, the people, now settled in the land, were left free to develop those tendencies which had all along existed. Then ensued that alternation of national apostasy and judgment, and of penitent return to God and deliverance, which constitutes, so to speak, the framework on which the Book of Judges is constructed. This part of Israel's history attained alike its highest and its lowest point in Samson, with whom the period of the Judges appropriately closes. For, the administration of Samuel forms only the transition to, and preparation for the establishment of royalty in Israel. But the spiritual import of the whole history of that period is summed up in these words of Holy Scripture (Psalm 44:2-4)"

I N every age, the memory of Jerusalem has stirred the deepest feelings. Jews, Christians, and Mohammedans turn to it wan reverent affection. It almost seems as if in some sense each could call it his "happy home," the .. name ever dear" to him. For our holiest thoughts of the past, and our happiest hopes for the future, connect themselves with "the city of our God." We know from many passages of the Old Testament, but especially from the Book of Psalms, with what ardent longing the exiles from Palestine looked towards it; and during the long centuries of dispersion and cruel persecution, up to this day, the same aspirations have breathed in almost every service of the synagogue, and in none more earnestly than in' that of the paschal night, which to us is for ever associated with the death of our Saviour. (Lectures delivered during the years 1880-84 in the Chapel...)
Lectures delivered during the years 1880-84 in the Chapel of Lincoln s Inn on the foundation of Bishop Warburton. I ts object, as expressed in the Will of the founder, is to prove the truth of re vealed religion in general, and of the Christian in particular, from the completion of those prophecies in the Old and New Testaments which relate to the Christian Church, especially to the apostacy of Papal Koine. From the wide range of subjects thus opened, it was necessary to select one and naturally that, which would most directly meet the present phase of theological discussion, and so best fulfil the purpose for which the Lectureship had been instituted. Not, indeed, that the primary object should be nega tive, either in the defence of Catholic truth from its assailants, or in the refutation of objections brought against it. A standard work in two volumes by noted theologian, Alfred Edersheim. The Life and times of Jesus the Messiah was published in 1883 after the author had spent seven years of continual research in a remote country parish. From his prodigious study he produced an unrivaled picture of the life of Christ and of the whole Jewish background--not merely of the archaeological details, but of the essential characteristics of Jewish thought and feeling. It is today the most extensively used life of Christ in the English language.

(Jesus the Messiah freedom of first composition. Dr. Eders...)
Jesus the Messiah freedom of first composition. Dr. Edersheim swork was planned emphatically upon a large scale. It had a certain breadth and richness of colouring which helped to carry off its profusion of detail. When the details were curtailed, this too had to be toned down. What could be done by omitting a phrase here, and a sentence there, has been done; and upon this much anxious care and thought have been expended. As to the matter of the omissions, this was to some extent prescribed by the nature of the case. The broad framework of narrative was of course indispensable; and along with this every effort has been made to save as much of the illustrative accessories as the size of the volume permitted. It is, however, greatly to be regretted that so much should have been lost which constituted the peculiar and unrivalled excellence of the larger book. Our generation has seen a number of attempts some in their way of great merit to reproduce the externals and surroundings of the Life and Ministry of Christ. But it will, I think, be admitted by the general consent of scholars that in this respect Dr. Edersheim surpassed his predecessors. No one else has possessed such a profound and masterly knowledge of the whole Jewish background to the picture presented in the Gospels not merely of the archaeology, which is something, but of the essential characteristics of Jewish thought and feeling, which is far more. It was inevitable that heavy sacrifices should be made here. A ll-important as these details are to the student, the ordinary reader would be simply oppressed and overpowered by them. For such readers the abridged edition is intended; but it is hoped that not a few may be encouraged to go on to the abundant stores of the larger book. Not illustrated. 1885 Excerpt: ...of the Lord, in opposition to that service of sin which was unto death. This, with all of struggle and suffering, but also with the ultimate victory, attaching to it. The whole subsequent history of Israel was the outcome and development of that in the patriarchal and ante-patriarchal period. Alike the ceremonial, the ritual, and the moral Law, as well as the promises, have their explanation and starting-point in the idea of the Servant of the Lord. The same contrast between the seen and the unseen, the present and the future, which had emerged in patriarchal history, characterised that of Israel in their relation to the other nations of the world. And the varying events which befell Israel were determined by their faithful adherence, or the opposite, to the Divine idea which they were intended to embody. Another stage, and we reach the period of the monarchy, which was that of Israel's manhood and maturity. To the idea of priesthood and of pro phetism, which had during the previous period been expressed in outward form, that of royalty was now added, but still with the underlying principle of the King as ' the servant of the Lord.' The great promise connected first with the patriarchs as God's anointed, and then with Israel as a royal nation, now attached itself to Israel's king, and became, so to speak, individualised in David and his seed. The picture presented in the history of David is still that of the suffering servant of Jehovah. But, by the side of it, that of the reigning servant of God is also placed. And as we follow the outward history of Israel, its great spiritual lessons appear with increasing clearness. The fate of the people is more distinctly shown to be dependent upon faithfulness to the covenant; the prophets point out with growing clea...

(AMONG the outward means by which the religion of Israel w...)
AMONG the outward means by which the religion of Israel was preserved, one of the most important was the centralisation and localisation of its worship in Jerusalem. If to some the ordinances of the Old Testament may in this respect seem narrow and exclusive, it is at least doubtful, whether without such a provision Monotheism itself could have continued as a creed or a worship. In view of the state of the ancient world, and of the tendencies of Israel during the earlier stages of their history, the strictest isolation was necessary in order to preserve the religion of the Old Testament from that mixture with foreign elements which would speedily have proved fatal to its existence. And if one source of that danger had ceased after the seventy years’ exile in Babylonia, the dispersion of the greater part of the nation among those whose manners and civilisation would necessarily influence them, rendered the continuance of this separation of as great importance as before. In this respect, even traditionalism had its mission and use, as a hedge around the Law to render its infringement or modification impossible.

( One of the best known and most important references on ...)
One of the best known and most important references on the life of Christ ever written, Alfred Edersheim's "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah" is a storehouse of information on the background of the New Testament. This classic work successfully portrays the streets, the marketplaces, the religious conflicts, the people, and the places of Jesus' earthly ministry. Edersheim divides his work into five sections, or books: Book 1 "The Preparation for the Gospel" Introductory historical, religious, political, and cultural material based on the author's extensive knowledge of Jewish lore and customs. Book 2 "From Bethlehem to Jordan" The background of Herod and his reign, St. John the Baptist and his message, and the birth and baptism of Jesus. Book 3 "From Jordan to the Mount of Transfiguration" Thirty-seven chapters explore the miracles and teachings of Jesus' early ministry. Book 4 "The Descent into the Valley of Humiliation" A history of the latter part of Jesus' ministry from the Transfiguration to the journey to Jerusalem. Book 5 "The Cross and the Crown" A chronicle of each day of Passion Week, from Palm Sunday to the Resurrection. Appendices Valuable background material on Jewish history, tradition, and law"

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1857 edition. Excerpt: ...ii. 2. For a-hurt calendar, see App I. should have corresponded to the middle of April), the first ripe sheaf of barley was to be presented in the temple. If the calendar had become much disordered, this would plainly be impossible. Hence during the preceding month (that of Adar), the high priest, or Nasi, went to inspect the fields, and, if necessary, decreed the insertion of an additional (13th) month between Adar and Nisan, which was designated as Ve-Adar, or Adar Sheni. In such a leap year, Ve-Adar occupied to all intents the place of Adar. In leap years Adar had always thirty, and Ve-Adar twenty-nine days. Every seventh year was a Sabbatical, and every fiftieth a year of Jubilee. In the Sabbatical year the ground remained wholly untilled. A Sabbatical could not be a leap year, but the year preceding it always was such. Sometimes two, but never three leap years, succeeded each other. Commonly every third year required the addition of a month. The mean duration of the Jewish month being 29 days, 12 hours, 44' 3 J", it required, during a period of nineteen years, the insertion of seven months in order to bring the lunar era in accordance with the Julian. Those insertions are now made in the 3d, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, and 19th years. Hence in order to find what Jewish year is a leap year, we have only to divide its number by 19; if the residue be 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, or 0, it is a leap year. The somewhat vague and unsatisfactory arrangements of the Jewish calendar were greatly improved by the mathematical labours of Rabbi Eleazar ben Hyrcanos, and especially by those of Samuel and Adda, two sages of Babylon. The earliest era adopted by the Jews, was that which was reckoned to commence with the deliverance from Egypt. During the...

(Second Edition, although happily they are not at present ...)
Second Edition, although happily they are not at present so urgently called for. With the feelings of sincere thankfulness for the kindness with which this book was received by all branches of the Church, only one element of pain mingled. Although I am well convinced that a careful or impartial reader could not arrive at any such conclusion, yet it was suggested that a perverse ingenuity might abuse certain statements and quotations for what in modern parlance are termed A nti-S emitic purposes. That any such thoughts could possibly attach to a book concerning Him, Who was Himself a Jew; Who in the love of His compassion wept tears of bitter anguish over the Jerusalem that was about to crucify Him, and Whose first utterance and prayer when nailed to the Cross was :l Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do would seem terribly incongruous and-painful. Nor can it surely be necessary to point out that the love of Christ, or the understanding of His Work and Mission, must call forth feelings far different from those to which reference has been made. To me, indeed, it is difficult to associate the so-called A nti Semitic movement with any but the lowest causes :envy, jealousy, and cupidity on the one hand; or, on the other, ignorance, prejudice, bigotry, and hatred of race. But as these are times when it is necessary to speak unmistakably, I avail myself of the present opportunity to point out the reasons why any Talmudic quotations, even if fair, can have no application for A nti-S emitic purposes. Edersheim was born in Vienna of Jewish parents of culture and wealth. His father suffered illness and financial reversals before Alfred could complete his university education, and he had to support himself.
He was educated at a local gymnasium and also in the Talmud and Torah at a Hebrew school, and in 1841 he entered the University of Vienna. Edersheim accompanied Duncan on his return to Scotland and studied theology at New College, Edinburgh and at the University of Berlin.
English was spoken in their home, and he became fluent at an early age. Edersheim emigrated to Hungary and became a teacher of languages. In 1846 Alfred was married to Mary Broomfield.
They had seven children.
He was a missionary to the Jews at Iaşi, Romania for a year. On his return to Scotland, after preaching for a time in Aberdeen, Edersheim was appointed in 1849 to minister at the Free Church, Old Aberdeen.
In 1861 health problems forced him to resign and the Church of Saint Andrew was built for him at Torquay. In 1872 Edersheim"s health again obliged him to retire, and for four years he lived quietly at Bournemouth.
He was appointed to the post of Warburtonian Lecturer at Lincoln"s Inn 1880-1884.
In 1882 he resigned and relocated to Oxford. He was Select Preacher to the University 1884-1885 and Grinfield Lecturer on the Septuagint 1886-1888 and 1888-1889. Edersheim died at Menton, France, on 16 March 1889.
