Alison Wilding was born on July 7, 1948, in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom.
Alison Wilding studied at Nottingham College of Art (now, School of Art and Design, a part of Nottingham Trent University) from 1967 to 1968, Ravensbourne College of Art and Design (now, Ravensbourne University London) from 1968 to 1971 and subsequently at the Royal College of Art from 1971 to 1973.
Alison Wilding came to prominence in the 1980s as one of a group of sculptors including Richard Deacon and Antony Gormley. From 1978, her sculpture has been occupied with the physical qualities of materials. Wilding uses traditional as well as modern sculptural processes, such as modelling, carving, casting and constructing to explore the contrasts and similarities in materials. Her sculptures have similarities to the work of minimalist artists such as Donald Judd, but often refer to the human figure. Wilding's first major solo exhibition was held at the Serpentine Gallery, London in 1985.
