Amanda Minnie Douglas was born on July 14, 1831 in New York City, New York, United States. She was a daughter of John N. and Elizabeth (Horton) Douglas.
Douglas obtained her formal education at the City Institute in New York.
Having early revealed a precocious talent for narration, shown in the telling of long fascinating stories to other children, she studied English and American literature with a private tutor after leaving school and began to exercise her own pen.
At the age of eighteen, however, she was about to take up designing and engraving when illness in the family forced her to stay at home and led her definitely to the pursuit of letters.
Before the publication of her first book Douglas contributed numerous stories to the New York Ledger, the Saturday Evening Post, the Lady’s Friend, and had already established herself in a literary milieu.
She became an important member of the Ray Palmer club the oldest women’s literary organization in the locality—and of the New Jersey Woman’s Press Club.
Her first book, In Trust, appeared in 1866, and from that date until 1913 when her last work, Red House Children at Grafton, was brought out, she published one or more volumes every year. In 1893 her novel Larry won the $2, 000 prize offered by the Youth s Companion for the best piece of fiction for young people.
Most of her works belonged to three extensive series, the Kathie Series, the Little Girl Series (A Little Girl in Old New York, 1896; A Little Girl in Old Boston, 1898; A Little Girl in Old Philadelphia, 1899, etc. ), and the Helen Grant Series. All these were works of fiction intended for young readers. They were loosely constructed domestic chronicles dealing sympathetically with the joys and sorrows of family life, introducing enough of the darker sides of existence to throw into relief the virtues of patience, faith, and honor.
Despite the fact that she never married, love of home and children formed the basic theme of all her work. Home in her books is always the haven where sorrows are healed and happiness is found.
While her characters exemplify copy-book manners and their geographically informative travels follow guide-book methods and itineraries, there is an undercurrent of warmth and vitality in the work of Miss Douglas that raises her novels somewhat above the level of mere didactic writing.
Her clear and simple style, without being brilliant, was well adapted to her audience and subjects. Although she lacked the breadth of interest and humor of her close friend Louisa M. Alcott, her works never rivaling the latter’s in popularity, nevertheless during her long life her books circulated widely and even today they are in constant demand in public and Sunday-school libraries.
