Chapman was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, but spent the majority of his youth in Sale on the other side of the city of Manchester.

He attended Manchester Grammar School, and during his time there developed an interest in radio broadcasting, wanting to work for Radio 1 from the age of 13.
Chapman began his career in 1996 as a continuity announcer on British Broadcasting Corporation Television before becoming the cricket correspondent for British Broadcasting Corporation North East radio. Chapman then joined British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 1 as a sports reporter before joining Radio 5 Live to host 5 live Sport. Chapman also hosts Match of the Day 2 and the British Broadcasting Corporation"s coverage of Rugby League.
