Apple was born in 1845 at Northampton, Pennsylvania but later moved to West Virginia.

Apple served in the American Civil War in Company I, 12th West Virginia Infantry for the Union Army and reached the rank of coporal. Apple moved to Elgin, Illinois after the war, where he became the city"s fire marshal. He died on June 7, 1890 at the age of 45 and is buried in the Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin.
After three other members of the regiment were killed carrying the regimental flag, Apple carried it for the remainder of the engagement.
