(In this first major biography of the author of "Democracy...)
In this first major biography of the author of "Democracy in America", André Jardin traces Alexis de Tocqueville's eventful life from his birth in 1805 to aristocratic parents in post-revolutionary France, through his trip to antebellum America as a young man, his adventures in Algeria and his political career in France's Second Republic, to his return to writing and the publication of his other classic work "L'Ancien régime et la révolution" in 1856. Jardin also offers an illuminating critical analysis of "Democracy in America", arguing that the concerns for just government, that inform this famous work, dominated Tocqueville's thought throughout his life.

André Jardin was born in 1912.
André Jardin was a historian, whose effort as a member of the committee, collecting and publishing the papers of Alexis de Tocqueville, placed him in an ideal position to write the definitive biography of the figure, whose importance is felt not only in his native France, but also in the United States. Jardin's book, "Tocqueville: A Biography", provides his readers with a marvelous introduction to the political shiftings, the gradual yet sometimes violent post-revolutionary cracking of the political structure in France, as it grappled simultaneously with the shattered legitimacy of the past, a slippery present and an ill-defined future.
Also, Jardin, together with Andre-Jean Tudesq, co-authored the "Restoration and Reaction, 1815-1848", a survey of the political, economic and intellectual life in the French provinces, as well as in Paris during turbulent era after Napoleon's downfall.
During the last decade of his life, in 1985, André published "Histoire du libéralisme politique: De la crise de l'absolutisme à la Constitution de 1875", a study of the political upheavals in France, following the country's decisive defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
