He lived in Hong Kong until he went to University in Manchester, England. In 2008 he signed his first contract as a professional football player for Happy Valley, which played in Hong Kong First Division League. After returning to the United Kingdom, Russell joined Mossley in the National Physical Laboratory First Division North and found employment with sportswear giants Adidas.
He joined Chorley in 2010 when manager Garry Flitcroft took over.
Foreign the 2013-2014 season, Russell chose AFC Fylde after being convinced by manager Dave Challinor. He helped the club retain the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy by beating Chorley 4-1 with one goal and one assistant
In July 2014, Andy announced on his twitter account that he has signed for South China for the 2014-2015 Hong Kong Premier League season. Coach Yeung Ching Kwong claims they need him because the club needs more local players for the 2015 AFC Cup.
He made his debut in a 2-0 loss to Qatar.
