(This book presents an overall view of the campaigns, from...)
This book presents an overall view of the campaigns, from the first skirmishes of 1452 to the last campaign in 1497, and examines the generalship of the commanders in both camps. Anthony Goodman discusses the military organization and assesses the effects of wars on society in general. He shows that in a period of rapid change in European methods of warfare the English were not so old-fashioned as had sometimes been supposed. The book makes extensive use of 15th-century sources, both English and Continental, including chronicles, civic centers, and letters, and presents a picture of the wars as they were seen and described by contemporaries.

(John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and pretender to the thr...)
John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and pretender to the throne of Castile, was son to Edward III, uncle to the ill-starred Richard III, and father to Henry IV and the Lancastrian line. The richest and most powerful subject in England, a key actor on the international stage, patron of Wycliffe and Chaucer, he was deeply involved in the Peasant's revolt and the Hundred Years War. He is also one of the most hated men of his time. This splendid study, the first since 1904, vividly portrays the political life of the age, with the controversial figure of Gaunt at the heart of it.

(Richard II was deposed and probably murdered at the end o...)
Richard II was deposed and probably murdered at the end of a dramatic kingship characterized by the struggle between royal authority and the power of the great magnates of the land. His final two years in power became known as tyranny. This collection of essays by leading historians presents an accurate version of the king's governance. Drawing on scholarship from both sides of the Atlantic, the re-evaluation of Richard's reign begins by deconstructing the distortions of chroniclers and the myth of the king's insanity. It goes on to examine the personal rule of the king, the role of his counsel and the court, and his relations with Londoners and the provinces, with the Church and the higher nobility. Other essays go beyond England's borders to look at the European perspective on trade and warfare, and on the marriage alliance between Richard and the house of Luxembourg. Finally, scholars of literature and the fine arts examine Richard's role as the chivalrous royal patron of culture. The combined result gives a rounded portrait of this fascinating and much-maligned king.

(Historians have researched extensively the motives and fo...)
Historians have researched extensively the motives and fortunes of kings, nobles, and gentlemen in the Wars of the Roses, that bewildering sequence of rebellions fought between 1455 and 1485. The shadows cast by the awesome puppet masters of the Wars, like Richard of York, Warwick the Kingmaker, or Richard III, add to the mist which swirls around the mass of participants. What sort of people were the soldiers? Why did they repeatedly buckle and saddle up for combat? What hopes and fears kept them awake, lying under the stars?

(Joan Plantagenet, acclaimed in her youth as the "Fair Mai...)
Joan Plantagenet, acclaimed in her youth as the "Fair Maid of Kent", became notorious for making both a clandestine and a bigamous marriage in her teens and, in her thirties, a scandalous marriage to her kinsman, Edward III's son and heir, Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince. Despite these transgressions, she later became one of the most influential people in the realm and a highly respected source of stability. This accessibly written account of her life sets her in the full context of her world and vividly portrays a spirited medieval woman who was determined to be mistress of her fate and to make a mark in challenging times.

Anthony Eric Goodman was born on July 21, 1936, in London, United Kingdom. He was the only child of an architect.
Anthony Goodman attended Selhurst High School from where he was the first pupil to win a place at Oxford. Then he graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1958.
Anthony Goodman was a scholar of medieval and renaissance history. He began his teaching career at the University of Edinburgh as an assistant lecturer in 1961 then becoming a professor of medieval and renaissance history. In 1993 he became chair of the department. In retirement, from 2002, he continued to teach Ph.D. students and went on writing.
Goodman's first book, The Loyal Conspiracy: The Lords Appellant under Richard II, was published in 1971. The next book is A History of England from Edward II to James I which covers a period known for the complexity of its political development and which has traditionally been documented by historians with difficulty.
Goodman is editor, with James L. Gillespie, of Richard II: The Art of Kingship, an examination of the reign of the ruler who followed Edward III and who stood up to the leaders of the Peasant Revolt at the age of fourteen. Richard II (1377-1399) who was deposed and most likely murdered extended his influence beyond England's borders and was a proponent of trade and culture. Goodman's introductory chapter touches on several themes that are treated in greater detail in subsequent essays, including Richard II's troubled relations with his noblemen, English intervention in the complex events unfolding in continental Europe, interactions between the crown and the church, and the king's dealings with the city of London. But the introduction also promises a breadth and richness seldom found in collections such as this.
Goodman and coeditor Angus Mac Kay collected eleven essays by renaissance scholars and published the tribute to historian Denys Hay as The Impact of Humanism on Western Europe. His final book, Joan, the Fair Maid of Kent: A Fourteenth-Century Princess and Her World, finished not long before his death, was published in 2017, and shines a light on Joan, the Fair Maid of Kent, wife of England's 14th-century Black Prince, who is seen as the first English Princess of Wales. Goodman is also remembered as a contributor to academic journals.
