Balwant Singh started his political career with student politics as a general secretary of Student Federation of India in 1963. He left Akali Dal to get elected to Rajya Sabha in 1996 and served as the Union Minister for Social Welfare. He contested for Punjab assembly in 2012 elections from Mohalli and lost.
