In 1961, Reuben Abel graduated from the University of Santa Clara, United States with the Bachelor's degree. In 1968, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, United States where he received two degrees - Master's and Ph.D.
Before embarking on his career in education, Reuben Abel worked as a department store buyer from 1929 until 1948.
From 1948 to 1961, he occupied the posts of the president and treasurer of Atlas Bedspread Company. From 1952 to 1955, he worked at the New School for Social Research in New York City first as a lecturer and ultimately, from 1967 to 1984, as adjunct professor of philosophy in graduate faculty.
He chaired the Conference on Methods in Philosophy and Sciences from 1966 to 1968 and again from 1990 to 1991. He also chaired the school’s Humanities Division of the New School for Social Research from 1965 to 1984, and served as associate dean from 1972 to 1974.
Abel was well-versed in the work of F. C. S. Schiller, authoring The Pragmatic Humanism of F. C. S. Schiller. He wrote other books, in particular Man Is the Measure: A Cordial Invitation to the Central Problems of Philosophy. He also edited Humanistic Pragmatism and wrote the foreword to Kenneth Winetrout’s F. C. S. Schiller and the Dimensions of Pragmatism.
