From the preface: The plan for the present treatise originated about a decade ago at the time of major developments relating collective nuclear properties to the motion of the individual nucleons. In trying to describe these developments, we gradually came to appreciate hat their proper exploitation required a broader discussion starting from the more phenomenological analysis of nuclear properties. We thus eventuallybecame invloved (without appreciating the time that would be required) in a more systematic attempt to evaluate the present status in our understanding of nuclear structure.
