Elaine Ryan Hedges was born on August 18, 1927 in Yonkers, New York, United States. She was the daughter of John Aloyisius and Catherine Mary Ryan.
Initially, Elaine was educated at Gorton High School in Yonkers in 1944. Four years later, in 1948, she obtained Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating from Barnard College. Hedges continued her studies and in 1950 attained Master of Arts degree in history from Radcliffe College. In 1970 she received Doctor of Philosophy degree at Harvard University.
Elaine Hedges began her career as an educator, first at Wellesley College in 1954, followed by a stint at the University of California in Berkeley, beginning from 1957 to 1958. She began a lengthy association with Towson State University in 1967, first as an assistant professor and ultimately as co-director of the school’s women’s studies program in 1972, a post she held to 1996.
At the time of her death, Hedges was a Professor Emeritus of English.
During her career, Elaine taught at the Freie Universitat in Berlin, as well as at San Francisco State College and Goucher College. Hedges also lectured in Beijing, China.
Elaine Hedges is best known for her ground-breaking scholarship on the significance of American women and sewing — particularly in reference to their quiltmaking in the nineteenth century. She also established the women’s studies program at Towson State University.
In 1998 Elaine was inducted into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame.
Elaine was a member of American Association of University Professors, Modern Language Association of America and American Studies Association.

Elaine married William Leonard Hedges on June 28, 1956. The couple gave birth to two children — Marietta and James.
