Filip Dorin was born on September 8, 1940 in Bor, Kingdom of Yugoslavia (nowadays Serbia); the son of Matevz and Matilda (Marko) Robar.
Dorin studied comparative literature and philosophy at the University of Ljubljana's Faculty of Arts. In 1969, he graduated from Columbia College, Chicago, where he studied screenwriting, directing, cinematography and film editing.
Dorin began his career as a teacher at the Institute Montesano in 1970. Two years later he took the position of an assistant professor at Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television.
At the beginning of the 1980s, he founded the independent production company Filmske alternative (nowadays Filmal Pro). He is the director and screenwriter of such films as "Xenia On Tour", 1975, "Jon's Flight", 1981, "The Windhunter", 1989, "Stryptych", 1995, "Aven Chavora", 2005, "The Wind Pays No Regard", 2008 and others. Also, Dorin is the editor of the films, including "Perspective Of Things", 1979, "Rams and Mammoths", 1985, "Stryptych", 1995 and others.
Dorin is a member of the Film-Makers Association of Slovenia.
In December 1964 Filip Dorin married Evelyn Dorin, with whom he divorced in 1972. They have a child - Diuna Dorin. In October 1976 he married Marta Pihlar. They have a child - Ajsa Dorin.
