Adele Dellenbaugh Hofmann was born on October 12, 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Frederick Samuel and Anne Celestine (Goddard) Dellenbaugh.
Adele graduated from Smith College in 1948 and received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Rochester in 1952.
Hofmann developed the practice of adolescent medicine, a sub-specialty of pediatrics. Many physicians treated teens no differently than young children, but Hofmann believed they had their own needs and care requirements.
Hofmann completed her pediatric residency at Babies Hospital in New York City and then was named chief of pediatric outpatient services at St. Luke’s Hospital. From there she took a post at Beth Israel Hospital and was assistant director of teenage service from 1963 to 1970.
Hofmann co-wrote, with Dr. Donald Graydanus, the textbook Adolescent Medicine, which won an award from the American College of Internal Medicine, as well as The Hospitalized Adolescent, which won the American Nurses Association award. Hofmann was considered by many to be a pioneer in the field of adolescent legal rights as they pertain to medical care, and she wrote the book Consent and Confidentiality in Child and Adolescent Care in 1984.
When Hofmann moved to California she became medical director of ambulatory pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Orange County and later was a director of adolescent medicine at UCI Medical Center, retiring in 1996.
