Willard Sterne Randall was born on March 13, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; the son of Leslie Fairbanks and Joan (Shepherd) Randall.
Willard Randall attended St. Joseph’s College between 1960 and 1969. He received a Bachelor of Science from Edison College in 1982 and a Master of Arts from Princeton University in 1984.
Willard Randall began his career in 1960 in Pottstown Mercury as a reporter. In a year, he became a legal writer and assistant manager at United States Corporation Co., and worked there for four years. From 1965 to 1966, he served in Mainland Journal as a reporter. Willard then worked in Philadelphia Bulletin as reporter, editor, and feature writer for five years, becoming editorial director of Philadelphia magazine. In 1972 Randall was appointed as a correspondent in Time-Life News Service, and in 1973 became a freelance writer.
Randall also worked as a lecturer and a visiting assistant professor of history at the University of Vermont, a visiting professor of humanities at John Cabot University and a lecturer at such colleges and universities as Princeton University, Lynchburg College, Middlebury College, Pennsylvania State University, Rutgers University, and Wyoming Seminary. Willard taught American history at Champlain College, where he was a Distinguished Scholar in History and is currently a Professor Emeritus. He is also a contributing editor to MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History.
Willard Sterne Randall has written twelve books. His books include A Little Revenge: Benjamin Franklin & His Son, Benedict Arnold: Patriot and Traitor, Thomas Jefferson: A Life, Alexander Hamilton: A Life, and Ethan Allen: His Life and Times and others.
