Social phobia is one of the most common psychological disorders in the general population. "Shy Children, Phobic Adults" describes the clinical presentation of social phobia and the empirically supported interventions used to treat it. The authors of this volume take a developmental approach to social phobia. Although many children who exhibit shyness do not grow up to be socially phobic, the fear of those with social phobia is the same across all ages, but with important differences. These authors maintain that chronological age affects the clinical presentation and the clinician's approach to intervention. Within this lifespan perspective, the authors outline the syndrome and its management. Chapters are then devoted to pharmacological, behavioural and cognitive-behavioural treatment approaches for both children and adults. The descriptions of these empirically-supported interventions are practitioner-focused, including step-by-step instructions in implementation. Case studies and common problems faced by clinicians are provided to lend an understanding of the nature and treatment of social phobia. This practical volume should be useful for practitioners, researcher-clinicians, psychiatrists, social workers and graduate students.
