Cover code #G-762 indicates first edition of this paperback original novel.; second in cult favorite Anthony Villiers series (other novels in the series are Star Well 1968 and Masque World 1969). Villiers is a sort of traveling adventurer/gambler/private eye, a kind of interplanetary Simon Templar, with a bit of Bret Maverick tossed in, living off his wits. He's young and slight of build, but that doesn't seem to stop him, or his faithful companion, Torve the Trog, a large furry toad who rides a red tricycle, from wandering the universe, having wildly improbable adventures rescuing fair maidens and thwarting the bad guys.

(The second of the justly famed Anthony Villiers novels. S...)
The second of the justly famed Anthony Villiers novels. Samuel Delany writes, in the introduction to the first volume, Starwell: "It ... examines the proposition that the world is composed of small communities of mutual interest ... Star Well is a gallery of gamblers, duels and double-crosses, a minuet of manners and manners mangled; the machinery of the universe is speculated upon; inspector generals arrive to inspect it. And Anthony Villiers, gentleman par excellence, dashes through it all, buckling a swash or two, bungling a couple of others."

What can you do with Yagoots? Yagoots? That's what Pickles and Daisy Smetana, formerly the Toast of the Empire, now the keepers of half an inn on a sleepy (but picturesque) vacation planet, wondered: What can you do with Yagoots? Our hero, Anthony Villiers, sometimes Viscount Charteris and peripatetic player of a most dangerous game, thought he knew. But then, how far can you trust the instincts of a man, however charming, who insists on traveling with a large, furry alien who rides a red tricycle? Someone who unveils suggestive imagery even in the innocent tales of the sainted Mrs. Waldo Wintergood herself? Even if talking pink clouds with illusions of deity do confide in him, how can you be quite sure of a man so sought after for purposes ranging from pornography to hero-worship to ... murder?

(In 2198, one hundred and fifty years after the desperate ...)
In 2198, one hundred and fifty years after the desperate wars that destroyed an overpopulated Earth, Man lives precariously on a hundred hastily-established colony worlds and in the seven giant Ships that once ferried men to the stars. Mia Havero's Ship is a small closed society. It tests its children by casting them out to live or die in a month of Trial in the hostile wilds of a colony world. Mia Havero's Trial is fast approaching and in the meantime she must learn not only the skills that will keep her alive but the deeper courage to face herself and her world. Published originally in 1968, Alexei Panshin's Nebula Award-winning classic has lost none of its relevance, with its keen exploration of societal stagnation and the resilience of youth.
