( A lively twist on the immigrant story When John Bardsl...)
A lively twist on the immigrant story When John Bardsley leaves England to seek his fortune in America, he finds that his new city, Philadelphia, is crawling with inchworms! No one seems to know how to get rid of them, and the American birds turn up their beaks at the thought of eating any. Recalling his rescue of a very hungry baby sparrow when he was a boy, John comes up with a novel way to solve the problem, and he once again sets sail across the ocean in order to save his new city – with some help from his feathered friends. Using detailed illustrations, Mordicai Gerstein tells the little-known story of how sparrows came to America and how John Bardsley came to be known as Sparrow Jack. Sparrow Jack is a 2004 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

( The extraordinary story of the composer Charles Ives. ...)
The extraordinary story of the composer Charles Ives. "Sometimes little Charlie lay in his crib just listening. He heard his mother’s long dress as she moved around his room. He heard big clocks and little clocks. He heard wagons and horse hooves. He heard dogs and crickets and the church bell next door." Charlie listened all through his boyhood, and as he grew into a man, he found he wanted to re-create in music the sounds that he heard every day. But others couldn’t hear what Charlie heard. They didn’t hear it as music – only as noise. In this daring and original book, Mordicai Gerstein graphically translates the audible into the visible – filling his pictures with noise – to tell the story of Charles Ives (1874–1954), a great musical innovator who let neither criticism nor public scorn keep him from composing music that expressed all that he heard in the world. He was finally recognized with a Pulitzer Prize in 1947. What Charlie Heard is a 2003 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

(According to the Bible there once lived a race of giants....)
According to the Bible there once lived a race of giants. The giants were greedy and violent and they turned away from God. Only one man pleased God at this time -- Noah. God chose Noah to tell the giants to change their ways, or e would destroy the world with a great flood. But the giants just sneered, so God instructed Noah to build an ark and collect a male and female of every creature on the earth. Miraculously, the ark helped to build itself, and the animals came on their won -- even some no one knew existed, such as the og and the rayeem. It rained for forty days and forty nights, drowning the giants and leaving only Noah, his family, and the animals alive. On the day the rain stopped, God gave Noah an important promise in the form of a special sign that would serve as a reminder of their pact until the end of time. Mordicai Gerstein uses legends that have arisen around the story of Noah to create a richer, more detailed version of this familiar Biblical tale. His intricate oil paintings further enhance the drama of the text, making this a refreshing and valuable telling of an old and cherished story.

( The story of a daring tightrope walk between skyscraper...)
The story of a daring tightrope walk between skyscrapers, as seen in Robert Zemeckis' The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In 1974, French aerialist Philippe Petit threw a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center and spent an hour walking, dancing, and performing high-wire tricks a quarter mile in the sky. This picture book captures the poetry and magic of the event with a poetry of its own: lyrical words and lovely paintings that present the detail, daring, and--in two dramatic foldout spreads-- the vertiginous drama of Petit's feat. The Man Who Walked Between the Towers is the winner of the 2004 Caldecott Medal, the winner of the 2004 Boston Globe - Horn Book Award for Picture Books, and the winner of the 2006 Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video.
