(Smith Hempstone is not the proverbial foreign corresponde...)
Smith Hempstone is not the proverbial foreign correspondent rushing breathlessly from crisis to crisis, but rather the modern successor to the Victorian explorer - infatigable, patient, careful, constantly alert, listening, watching, recording, traveling eternally, not by plane but by car, by truck, on foot, talking to the lowliest porters and to the members of the new African elite ensconced in the seats of the former viceroys, checking what he hears against available sources. He has written a remarkable book, combining the most painstaking research with a brilliant interviewing technique. Here is what he calls the "new Africa": the emergent African states south of the Sahara and north of the Congo. Here are the facts and colors of this new Africa, so clear and real the reader can almost feel the vibrant humanity of these mysterious lands. Africa-Angry Young Giant will awaken many people to the enormous importance of what is happening in Africa today - socially, politically, economically, and historically.

By Smith Hempstone. Published by University of the South Press, Sewanee, Tennessee. This is a rare and auspicious marriage of writer and story. Hempstone is a distinguished journalist who did a rousing diplomatic tour of duty on the continent he knows and loves. That he lived to tell about it is in itself remarkable, and so is this book.

A gripping novel recreating all the tense moments of the Arab - Israeli war. Hempstone uses a broad canvas; the many characters include infantrymen, tank officers and pilots on the Israeli side, as well as Syrian, Jordanian and Egyptian soldiers, officers and diplomats. Each of the characters is involved in his own small segment of the war, and their interwoven experiences add up to a mosaic of all aspects of that short but fateful conflict....Reading Mr. Hempstone's novel evokes a powerful sense of what that war was really like.
