( In this collection of short stories, originally publish...)
In this collection of short stories, originally published in 1974, Grace Paley "makes the novel as a form seem virtually redundant" (Angela Carter, London Review of Books). Her stories here capture "the itch of the city, love between parents and children" and "the cutting edge of combat" (Lis Harris, The New York Times Book Review). In this collection of seventeen stories, she creates a "solid and vital fictional world, cross-referenced and dense with life" (Walter Clemons, Newsweek).

( This first collaboration of two long-time feminist ...)
This first collaboration of two long-time feminist and antiwar activists is a wonderful melding of word and image that creates a powerful call for world peace. Paley's poems and short fiction and William's vivid watercolors depict the beauty and dignity of "ordinary" lives from El Salvador to the Bronx, from New Hampshire to Vietnam. Scenes and stories of domestic life, solitude, and nature are interspersed with heart-wrenching images of women widowed and children crippled by war and incarcerated by urban poverty, Here, too, are stories and paintings of protest, joyous and defiant.

Review "Grace Paley makes me weep and laugh-and admire. She is that rare kind of writer, a natural, with a voice like no one else's: funny, sad, lean, modest, energetic, acute."-Susan Sontag "Grace Paley is a wonderful writer and troublemaker. We are fortunate to have her in our country."-Donald Barthelme "I can't think of another writer who captures the itch of the city, love between parents and children, or the cutting edge of combat, as well."-Lis Harris, The New York Times Book Review "Technically, Grace Paley's work makes the novel as a form seem virtually redundant. Each one of her stories has more abundant inner life than most other people's novels . . . Her prose presents a series of miracles of poetic compression."-Angela Carter, London Review of Books "A solid and vital fictional world, cross-referenced and dense with life."-Walter Clemons, Newsweek About the Author Grace Paley remains one of America's most revered short story writers. Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1922, Paley established a reputation as a bard of Jewish New York with highly acclaimed collections like "The Little Disturbances of Man" (1959), "Enormous Changes at the Last Minute" (1974), and "Later the Same Day" (1985). Her most recent work, "The Collected Stories," was published in 1994 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

This reissue of Grace Paley's classic collection--a finalist for the National Book Award--demonstrates her rich use of language as well as her extraordinary insight into and compassion for her characters, moving from the hilarious to the tragic and back again. Whether writing about the love (and conflict) between parents and children or between husband and wife, or about the struggles of aging single mothers or disheartened political organizers to make sense of the world, she brings the same unerring ear for the rhythm of life as it is actually lived. The Collected Stories is a 1994 National Book Award Finalist for Fiction.

This rich and multifaceted collection is Grace Paley's vivid record of her life. As close to an autobiography as anything we are likely to have from this quintessentially American writer, "Just As I Thought" gives us a chance to see Paley not only as a writer and "troublemaker" but also as a daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother. Through her descriptions of her childhood in the Bronx and her e...

Poetry. " Grace Paley is a poet of great whimsy and wisdom. She is a teller of proverbs, she is funny and poignant, a writer of great power and great delicacy. She is one of our finest - and most original - poets. I love reading her" -Gerald Stern.
