( In 1942, America’s most crucial mission was to provide ...)
In 1942, America’s most crucial mission was to provide arms and supplies to our English and Russian allies. Theodore Taylor, who served in the merchant marines in World War II, tells the tragic tale of a convoy of 33 ships that sailed from Iceland to Russia in an effort to bring the Soviets needed tanks, trucks, airplanes, and ammunition. In vivid detail, Taylor follows one of the ships through the frigid waters of the Arctic as it battles Nazi bombers and submarinesand as its crew helplessly watches many of their companion ships perish in the mad dash to safe port.

(Jesse was raised in a poor but loving family and instille...)
Jesse was raised in a poor but loving family and instilled with values of dignity, education, and perseverance even in the midst of deeply entrenched segregation. A star athlete and an outstanding student, Jesse turned a deaf ear to everyone who told him that he should attend a black college, or that he didn't stand a chance of becoming a Navy pilot. Undeterred, he made his way from the deep South to the campus of Ohio State University. Then, defying the wishes of his family and an unwritten rule of racial exclusion, he qualified for the Navy reserve and was accepted into the Naval Air Training School at Glenview, Illinois-the first black man to enter the program. On March 18, 1947, late morning, like a bird, like a kite, like an impossible dream, Jesse Leroy Brown was flying. While other applicants-many from upper-class backgrounds-were weeded out of the rigorous qualifying process, Jesse forged ahead, often directly in the face of shameful racism and hostile superior officers. When he arrived at the cradle of Naval aviation in Pensacola, Florida, in 1947, he knew the washout rate was high and the odds were stacked against a man openly referred to as "nigger." But Jesse Leroy Brown had lots of practice beating the odds, and now he was on his way to becoming the first black man to fly a Navy fighter and make a carrier landing. He was also on his way to becoming an American hero over the battlefields of Korea. The Flight of Jesse Leroy Brown is both a stirring story ofa man breaking historic racial barriers and a thrilling tale ofNaval carrier aviation. Award-winning author TheodoreTaylor, a master of adventure on land and sea, has written abiography that will speak to boththose who love the excite-ment of combat in the air ... and to anyone who has everdreamed the impossible dream.Jesse Leroy Brown was raised in the segregated South by a hard-working, loving family who instilled values of dignity, education, and perseverance. A star athlete and an outstanding student, he was determined to become a Navy pilot, although such a thing was unheard of for a black man in the 1940s. Undettered, he entered Ohio State University, rather than a black college, and was able to qualify for the Navy reserve and was accepted into the Naval Air Training School at Glenview, Illinois. Despite racism, and open hostility by many of his superior officers, he finally reached his goal, flying a Navy fighter plane and landing it on a carrier--the first African American ever to do so.

(Available for the first time in a Yearling edition, the c...)
Available for the first time in a Yearling edition, the classic, inspiring story of a dog who triumphs against all odds, by the bestselling author of The Cay. Helen adored her beautiful golden Labrador from the first moment he was placed in her arms, a squirming fat sausage of creamy yellow fur. As her best friend, Friar Tuck waited daily for Helen to come home from school and play. He guarded her through the long, scary hours of the dark night. Twice he even saved her life. Now it's Helen's turn. No one can say exactly when Tuck began to go blind. Probably the light began to fail for him long before the alarming day when he raced after some cats and crashed through the screen door, apparently never seeing it. But from that day on, Tuck's trouble--and how to cope with it--becomes the focus of Helen's life. Together they fight the chain that holds him and threatens to break his spirit, until Helen comes up with a solution so new, so daring, there's no way it can fail.

(There are those who live extraordinary lives, and there a...)
There are those who live extraordinary lives, and there are those who tell the stories. Award-winning author Theodore Taylor is that rarest of combinations: he does both. Having spent a lifetime creating characters, writing novels, and recounting the tales of others’ noteworthy acts, Theodore Taylor finally tells his own story in his new autobiography, "Making Love to Typewriters." His is a story worth telling, too, for in between the hours spent at his beloved typewriter enthralling audiences with his words, Theodore Taylor lived a life full of adventure, excitement and characters, the likes of which are hard to find today. From his humble beginnings in Statesville, North Carolina, to his rise to one of the country’s most prolific and bestselling authors, Theodore Taylor shares the stories behind his stories. He remembers his days as a child in the South, where the memories of simple pleasures became the backdrop of future novels such as "The Weirdo," winner of the 1992 Mystery Writers of America "Edgar" award. He tells of his time as a Merchant Marine in the Caribbean, the eventual setting of his award-winning classic, "The Cay." He recounts his time as a Hollywood scriptwriter, where he lived and worked with screen legends as a means of supporting his own passion. He did it all with aplomb, taking the exceptional in stride as he created fifty-nine books for adults, children and young adults alike. A master at his craft, Theodore Taylor has created countless memorable characters throughout his career as an author. In "Making Love to Typewriters," his fans finally learn the stories of who and what inspired the man who has spent a lifetime inspiring others.
