Jason Miller was born on April 22, 1939 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States. He was a son of John Anthony Miller Sr., and Mary Claire Miller. His parents moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania, when he was an infant.
Jason Miller graduated from St. Patrick's High School. He holds a degree from the University of Scranton. Miller also attended the Catholic University of America in Washington, District of Columbia.
After graduating from the Catholic University of America, Jason Miller briefly pursued a career as a high school English teacher. Miller was the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of That Championship Season, which also earned him an Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award in 1973.
As of 1972, Miller was a resident of Neponsit, Queens, New York. In 1982 Miller returned to Scranton to become artistic director of the Scranton Public Theatre, a regional theatre company.
An actor in such films as The Exorcist and Nickel Ride, and in television movies such as F. Scott Fitzgerald in Hollywood and Vampire, Miller worked various service jobs while writing plays. Miller acted in numerous later films, including Toy Soldiers (1984), Exorcist III: The Legion (1990), and Rudy (1993). His screenplay writings include Lou Gehrig Did Not Die of Cancer, Nobody Hears a Broken Drum, and Barrymore’s Ghost.

In 1963 Jason Miller married Linda Gleason. In 1973 they divorced. In 1974 he married Susan Bernard. In 1983 they also divorced. In 1984 Miller married Ruth Josem. In 1990 they divorced. He had four children: Jennifer, Jason Patric, Jordan, Joshua John.
