He left the Mito Middle School without graduating.
Became a disciple of Shiki Masaoka, noted haiku and waka poet (1900) and contributed his works to the Aaebi and Araragi, poetry magazines. Was one of the most distinguished waka composers of his time. Also wrote novels, including “Earth” which was acclaimed when it was serially carried by the Asahi Shimbun. It was the first novel in Japan which realistically described the lives of peasants.
