Vittorio Alfieri was born of a wealthy and aristocratic family at Asti in Piedmont, Jan. 16, 1749.
At the age of nine he was sent to the Accademia of Turin, where he remained eight years and, according to his own account, learned nothing.
His fame rests on nineteen tragedies written between 1775 and 1789, and on his autobiography, Vita di Vittorio Alfieri scritta da esso, begun in 1790. He also wrote political tracts, comedies, and a large body of poetry, including many excellent sonnets. Lover of liberty, enemy of tyranny, he proclaimed that Italy must be freed from foreign domination and thereby became a forerunner of the Risorgimento. Alfieri's Vita and his other writings reveal a vigorous and original personality. In 1766 he began his restless travels to all parts of Europe. In England he felt free; France he detested; and the military spirit of Prussia repelled him. Proud and melancholy by nature, he avoided social contacts, yet he had friends who aided him in many ways. A liaison with Lady Ligonier (Penelope Pitt) in London ended in a duel with her husband. Returning to Turin, Alfieri became intimate with Marchesa Turinetti di Priero; when he finally realized that this affair was degrading and that his life had been idle and aimless, he began to devote himself to study and writing. Illness sometimes interfered with his work, but never diminished his ardor. Since Italian literature lacked great tragedies, he determined to attain glory by producing them. His first effort, Cleopatra, performed in 1775, failed to satisfy him and was not published until after his death. A serious difficulty was his imperfect knowledge of Italian; in Piedmont he had used either French or the local dialect. He therefore read extensively and, beginning in 1776, spent much time in Tuscany in order to master the language. Filippo, his first tragedy after Cleopatra, was rewritten five times. In 1783 he published in Siena ten of the fourteen tragedies he had then completed. From 1784 to 1792, with occasional periods of separation, he and the Countess, who had left her husband, were together in Paris and at Colmar in Alsace; he wrote five more tragedies and published an edition of all nineteen in Paris, 1788-1789. In 1789 he published at Kehl Della tirannide ("On Tyranny"), written in 1777, and Del principe e delle lettere ("The Prince and Literature"), conceived in 1778 and completed in 1786. In these prose tracts he maintained that literature must be based on truth and morality and can flourish only under liberty. The outbreak of the French Revolution at first aroused Alfieri's enthusiasm, as had the American Revolution; but in August 1792, conditions had become intolerable, and he and the Countess escaped from Paris with difficulty. After this they lived in Florence, and Alfieri continued to write. Except for Misogallo (1799), a collection of prose and verse filled with invective against the French, the works produced during his last years add little to his fame. Alfieri died at Florence on Oct. 8, 1803, and lies buried in Santa Croce. His complete works were issued in twenty-two volumes at Pisa, 1805-1815, and many of his works have been often reprinted. Alfieri's tragedies are Classical in form, in unrhymed verse which is so concise as to seem at times dry and harsh; at its best it has beauty, dignity, and power. His purpose was to present striking examples of heroism from legend or history. Filippo concerns Philip II of Spain, a typical tyrant; Don Garzia and La Congiura dei Pazzi are from Florentine history; Rosmunda is medieval; Maria Stuarda is concerned with Mary Queen of Scots; and Saul is from the Old Testament. Alfieri's other tragedies are derived from the Classics: Polinice, Antigone, Agamennone, Oreste, Timoleone, Merope, and Agide from Greek; Virginia, Ottavia, Sofonisba, Mirra (Myrrha, from Ovid), Bruto Primo (the Brutus who condemned his sons to death), and Bruto Secondo (the conspirator against Caesar) from the Roman. Since tyrants are naturally somewhat alike, there is some monotony in the tragedies dealing with the struggle for liberty; where other motives are involved there is more interest and variety, as in Oreste, Mirra, and particularly Saul, Alfieri's masterpiece. In the latter work the drama is in the mind of Saul, confused and vacillating between jealousy of David and desire to accept his aid in the coming battle. In his passionate emotion Saul suggests the personality of Alfieri, who has been called a Romantic in spirit expressing himself in Classical forms. To American readers, not the least interesting of Alfieri's works are the five odes grouped under the title L'America libera ("Free America"), written in 1781-1783. The patriotic literature which Alfieri initiated anticipated the Romantic school of the following century, and was the foundation of the movement for the union and independence of Italy.

In Florence Alfieri met the woman to whom he was devoted from 1777 until his death: Louise de Stolberg (1752 - 1824), the wife of Charles Edward Stuart the "Young Pretender, " known as Count of Albany.
