August von Platen was born on 24 October 1796 at Ansbach, the son of the Oberforstmeister (a senior public servant) of that state, Count Philipp August von Platen-Hallermünde, by second wife Baroness Christiane Eichler von Auriz.
Platen entered the school of cadets (Kadettenhaus) in Munich, Bavaria, where he showed early poetic talent. In 1810 as an adolescent he passed into the royal school of pages (Königliche Pagerie).
He was destined for a military career, but after serving in the last campaign against Napoleon left the army. The rest of his short life was devoted to study and literature. He spent nine years (1817 - 1826) at the universities of Würzburg and Erlangen, studying foreign literatures and natural science. He mastered many foreign verse forms, two of which, the sonnet and the Persian ghazel, he brought to perfection in German verse. His poems have a chiseled perfection, acquired by painstaking effort, which led later poets such as Conrad Ferdinand Meyer and Detlev von Liliencron to hail Platen as their master. His most striking characteristic is an insatiable love of beauty, which he failed to find in life, yet found in literature and art. Besides his many poems in the more exotic foreign forms, he wrote a number of short ballads, which are among the best and most popular of his works. Platen's other literary work was mainly in the field of satiric drama. His two best-known plays are satiric comedies, Die verhängnisvolleverhangnisvolle Gabel (1826) and Der romantische Ödipus (1829). Platen possessed an intensely patriotic spirit. In his poems of political import he offered an interpretation of current affairs that was both liberal and prophetic. His predilection for Classical art and literature led him to spend years in Italy and Sicily.

Quotations: "True love is deemed to be the most tender of our emotions, as even the blind and deaf know; but I know, what few believe, that true friendship is more tender still. "
