critic translator scholars poet
Schlegel was born on September 8, 1767 in Hanover, where his father, Johann Adolf Schlegel, was a Lutheran pastor.
He was educated at the Hanover gymnasium and at the University of Göttingen.
After studying at Göttingen and teaching in Amsterdam, Schlegel came in 1796 to Jena.
His university lectures Über philosophische Kunstlehre were published in 1911. At Jena he began his most monumental work, the translation of seventeen of Shakespeare's plays (1797 - 1810), one of the world's greatest translations, of amazing fidelity and felicity. It made Shakespeare a German classic and, together with the fine interpretation in Schlegel's Vienna lectures, laid the basis for modern Shakespeare study in Germany. Schlegel also did pioneer work in opening up Romance literatures to Germany, making excellent translations of five of Calderón's plays (Spanisches Theater, 2 vol. , 1804-1809) and of the works of Dante and other poets (Blumensträusse italienischer, spanischer und portugiesicher Poesie, 1804). A break between the Schlegels and Schiller quickly led to the emergence of the so-called Romantic School and the launching of its chief organ, the Athenaeum (3 vol. , 1798 - 1800). This journal was edited and for the most part written by the brothers, who here appear as the leaders of the new Romantic criticism. Romantic doctrine, particularly in philosophy and art, was more fully and methodically expounded in the lectures which Schlegel delivered in Berlin, 1801-1804, Vorlesungen über schöne Literatur und Kunst (3 vol. , 1884). Schlegel's original works began with Gedichte (1800) and continued with a biting satire on Kotzebue (1801) and a tragedy, Ion (1803), strongly influenced by Euripides and Goethe. They terminated with Poetische Werke (2 vol. , 1812). Schlegel was not an inspired poet but a deliberate craftsman, master of many forms (especially the sonnet), correct and polished, but academic and passionless. In 1804 Schlegel became literary adviser to Mme de Staël, whose book De l'Allemagne owes much to him. Schlegel himself became an accomplished French stylist, publishing in French several literary treatises and issuing political propaganda for Crown Prince Bernadotte of Sweden. In 1808 he delivered at Vienna his most influential lectures, Vorlesungen überuber dramatische Kunst und Literatur (3 vol. , 1809 - 1811), which were soon translated into most European languages and became for other countries the chief source of information about German Romanticism. As professor at Bonn University, 1818-1845, Schlegel pioneered in the study of Oriental literatures. He issued an Indic periodical and scholarly editions of Sanskrit classics. Schlegel's knowledge of ancient and modern literatures was vast, his taste was exquisite, and his influence as a critic and expositor of Romanticism reached far beyond the confines of Europe. A skillful and versatile writer, a brilliant lecturer, a discerning critic with unlimited capacity for empathic appreciation, he was in the highest sense of the word a translator, a transmitter. He could convey ideas, both his own and those of profounder minds, lucidly and impressively to the wider public, and this made him the official leader and ambassador of German Romanticism. He died in Bonn in 1845.

Quotations:
"In actual life, every great enterprise begins with and takes its first forward step in faith. "
"Egotism erects its center in itself; love places it out of itself in the axis of the universal whole. Love aims at unity, egotismat solitude. Love is the citizen ruler of a flourishing republic, egotism is a despot in a devastated creation. "
"Our mind has its own ideal time, which is no other but the consciousness of the progressive development of our beings. "
He was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1836.
He married Caroline, the widow of the physician Böhmer. After the death of Madame de Staël, Schlegel married (1818) a daughter of Heinrich Paulus, but this union was dissolved in 1821.
