Marlene Nourbese Philip was born on February 3, 1947, in Moriah, Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago. She is the daughter of Parkinson Philip-Yeates and Undine (Bowles) Philip.
Philip was educated at the University of the West Indies, graduating from it with a bachelor's degree in 1968. She subsequently pursued graduate degrees in political science and law at the University of Western Ontario in 1973.
Philip started her career, practising law for seven years in Toronto, first at Parkdale Community Services and then in the partnership, Jemmott and Philip. During this time she completed two books of poetry. In 1983 she gave up the practice of law to devote more time to writing.
Currently, Philip works as a freelance poet, novelist, playwright, essayist and short story writer for adults, living in Toronto, Canada.
During her long career, Philip has also taught at the University of Toronto, taught creative fiction at the third-year level at York University and has been a writer in residence at McMaster University and the University of Windsor.

Philip married Delf Omar King on February 3, 1969. The couple had one child, Bruce Omar, but then got divorced in 1974. The next year, Philip married Paul Chandless Chamberlain, with whom she has 2 children, Hardie Osei and Hesper Salmon Zahra.
