John Gilmore was born on July 5, 1935, in Los Angeles, California, United States. He was the son of Robert Thomas and Marguerite (McFarren) Gilmore.
John attended New York University and received a Bachelor of Arts from Antioch College.
John Gilmore began his career as a child actor. He appeared in a Gene Autry movie and bit parts at Republic Studios. He worked in the Los Angeles Police Department safety films and did stints on radio. Eventually he appeared in commercial films. His acting career consisted mainly of guest spots on many of the most popular shows of the time such as Bonanza and Naked City, but it was his offscreen exploits which made him a familiar face to audiences. After five years in which he wrote a dozen motion picture scripts and poems, Gilmore eventually settled into a literary career as a journalist, true crime writer and novelist. He also served as head and lecturer of the writing program at Antioch University from 1974 to 1976.
From his seven year friendship with Marilyn Monroe which spawned Inside Marilyn Monroe, to his rather personal relationship with James Dean which began in 1953 and led to the books The Real James Dean, and Live-Fast, Die Young: Remembering the Short Life of James Dean, he introduces the world to a Hollywood sub-culture few could even imagine. He delves into the darker side with works like, Manson: The Unholy Trail of Charlie and the Family, formerly The Garbage People. He is the author of the classic true crime book, Severed: The True Story of the Black Dahlia, and Laid Bare: A Memoir of Wrecked Lives and the Hollywood Death Trip, wherein he recounts his experiences with Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, Jack Nicholson, Brigitte Bardot, Dennis Hopper, and Jayne Mansfield among others. His last published work was On the Run with Bonnie & Clyde, which he called his "true crime, creative nonfiction."
Gilmore was frequently interviewed in the media by the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times as well as other international publications, and documentaries, and was described as a noir cult figure, a "cultural icon," with numerous books always in the works. He was and continues to be published worldwide.
