Sergey Borisovich studied at the literary department of the Higher State Courses of Art History at Leningrad Institute of the History of Art (1928-1930), studied textology under the guidance of Y.N. Tynianov. He was expelled from Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) to Voronezh (March 1935). In July 1936, Rudakov returned to Leningrad, graduated in absentia from A.I. Herzen State Pedagogical Institute (Herzen State Pedagogical University) (1941).
In March 1935, Sergey Borisovich was expelled from Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) to Voronezh, where at one time he worked in a design architectural studio. He participated in the activities of the Pushkin Commission of USSR Academy of Sciences. Member of World War II.
From the very first days in Voronezh, Sergey Borisovich became close to Osip Emilievich Mandelstam and began to work on his auto-commentary on previously published books. He was seen visiting Mandelstams’ place with A.A. Akhmatova, then - E.G. Herstein in 1936. Rudakov’s letters from Voronezh to Leningrad to his wife, L.S. Finkelstein, were kept and published. These letters contain a lot of historical and everyday details and information about the cultural and creative life in the city.
