Anderson's early education was at Vitebsk Gymnasium. In 1866 he attended Saint-Petersburg University but did not finish his studies there.
In the 1870s and 1880s he began publishing his novels, feature stories and caricature in comedy magazines. In some of his stories he successfully showed comic inconsistencies as well as some dramatic aspects of life. He also performed as a poet and translated poetry and prose.
In his last years he worked on the "Biographical Dictionary of Russian fiction writers, poets and critics".
