Ivan Alexandrovich started service as a registrar, later as a translator in the Collegium of Foreign Affairs since 1822. In 1832 he got a rank of chamber junker. Ivan Alexandrovich was a diplomatic official in Russian diplomatic mission in Dresden, in 1836 he was recalled from Germany. Аrom 1838-1841 he occupied a position of the office of special assignments in the Asian department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; further from 1841, Ivan Alexandrovich served as a court adviser in Saint Petersburg diplomatic department.
On May 5, 1842, Ivan Alexandrovich died in a spell of mental illness.
In 1827, while in Dresden, Ivan Alexandrovich became a close friend to A.I. Turgenev, who found in his works "a true talent". Also he made friends with V.A Zhukovsky and I.I. Kozlov, they both admitted his talent in many spheres such as art and poetry. His most famous works are "Vstrecha", "Chorno-golubyye glaza", "Elegy" etc. Many of his poems he dedicated to his wife M.A. Stolypina.
