Wu-chi Liu was born on July 27, 1907, in Wujiang, Jiangsu, China. He was a son of Liu Yazi, a poet and activist.
Wu-chi Liu moved to Wisconsin in 1927 to attend Lawrence College (now Lawrence University), where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1928; he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in English literature from Yale University in 1931, and also did postdoctoral work at the University of London.
Returning to China in 1932, Wu-chi Liu taught English at Nankai University before World War II and was a professor of foreign languages at National Central University during the war. In the late 1940s, he decided to return to the United States and teach Chinese languages and culture. He was a visiting professor at Rollins College and Yale University, and during the early 1950s was also chairman of the department of Chinese studies at Hartwick College. This was followed by a one-year stint at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1961, Lui became a professor of East Asian languages and literature at Indiana University, Bloomington. He remained there until his retirement as an emeritus professor in 1976. In 1989, he started up a new literary International Southern Society and became an editor of its journal.
Wu-chi Liu wrote many scholarly essays on Chinese philosophy, literature, and drama. His edited work is Sunflower Splendor: Three Thousand Years of Chinese Poetry (1975). Other works by Liu include An Introduction to Chinese Literature (1966) and Selected Essays by Liu Wu-chi (1984).
