(Digital Image Processing: PIKS Scientific Inside provides...)
Digital Image Processing: PIKS Scientific Inside provides a complete introduction to the field and includes new information that updates the state of the art. The text offers coverage of new topics and includes interactive computer display imaging examples and computer programming exercises that illustrate the theoretical content of the book. These exercises can be implemented using the Programmer's Imaging Kernel System (PIKS) application program interface included on the accompanying CD.

(Developing Visual Applications is the first authoritative...)
Developing Visual Applications is the first authoritative guide to both XIL and the basics of image processing. Every XIL imaging function is introduced in a non-mathematical fashion and then followed up with precise mathematical definitions, so knowledgeable developers can understand exactly how each function behaves. The accompanying CD-ROM contains source, images, and binaries for the XIL libraries on Solaris for both SPARC and x86, HPUX, and Windows 95 platforms, as well as several complete XIL programs and functions discussed throughout the book.

(The subject of digital image processing has migrated from...)
The subject of digital image processing has migrated from a graduate to a junior or senior level course as students become more proficient in the mathematical background earlier in their college education. With that in mind, Introduction to Digital Image Processing is simpler in terms of mathematical derivations and eliminates derivations of advanced subjects. Most importantly, the textbook contains an extensive set of programming exercises for students. The textbook examines the basic technologies needed to support image processing applications, including the characterization of continuous images, image sampling and quantization techniques, and two-dimensional signal processing techniques.

William K. Pratt was born on June 24, 1937, in Kankakee, Illinois, United States. He is the son of Kenneth Alvin and Helen Louise Pratt.
William Pratt began his studies at Bradley University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1959. He continued his studies at the University of Southern California and obtained a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1965.
William Pratt began his career after getting a bachelor's degree. He became a member of technical staff at Hughes Aircraft Company in 1959 where he worked till 1965. After receiving his doctor's degree in 1965, he began his teaching career at the University of Southern California as a professor of electrical engineering, the position he held till 1979. He was also a founder and director of the Image Processing Institute at this university. From 1979 till 1981 he was senior vice president of Compression Labs, Inc. Then Pratt founded Vicom Systems, Inc. where he was chair, chief executive officer, and chief technical officer till 1988. After that, he joined Sun Microsystems, Inc. as director of multimedia and imaging technology, holding this position till 1994.
In 1993 he founded PixelSoft, Inc., which has developed and marketed image processing software based upon the International Standards Organization Programmer's Imaging Kernel System (PIKS) application program interface. In 1996 he became a chief technology officer for software at Photon Dynamics, Inc., a leading supplier of image processing equipment for industrial inspection applications in the display industry.
In the field of laser communications, he developed the basic concepts of laser modulation and detection processes. He was responsible for the discovery of the transform image coding concept, which is the basis of the JPEG and MPEG image coding standards. He also invented a facsimile coding system and a means of high-speed image convolution. He was a consultant to numerous corporations, including Aerojet-General, Bendix, Ford Aerospace, International Business Machines Corp., and Silicon Graphics. Pratt also was a visiting professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 and a visiting scientist and visiting professor at the University of Paris in 1977-1978.
In the 1960s Pratt also began writing and editing books. The first book was Laser Communication Systems (1969). His other writings include Computer Techniques in Image Processing (1970), Digital Image Processing: PIKS Scientific Inside (1978), Image Processing and Interchange: Implementation and Systems (1992), Developing Visual Applications: XIL, an Imaging Foundation Library (1997), and most recent Introduction to Digital Image Processing (2013).

1997William Pratt is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was a member of the technology advisory board of Image Enhancement Systems, Inc. in 1997.
Pratt is a holder of patents for television coder, computer simulator, facsimile coder, image coder, two-dimensional convolution processor, and flat-panel defect detector.
William Pratt was married twice. He married a woman named Barbara but the marriage ended. Later he married a woman named Rochelle S. The marriage produced four children: Kathleen Ann, Carolyn Lee Pratt Konecki, Christine Maree Pratt Jorgenson, and Michael Thomas.
