(In the Rocky Mountains, the wild folk are stirring before...)
In the Rocky Mountains, the wild folk are stirring before dawn has driven the stars from the sky. The paths of nine animals cross during the day. The Coyote and Bobcat hunt to feed their young, while the Snowshoe Rabbit, Grouse, Pack Rat, Fawn, Water Ouzel, and Marmot outwit the hunters with all the instincts God has given them. Meanwhile the Porcupine, deserted by her mother, begins her first day of living alone. Learn a host of facts about the animals God has created.

(In this exquisitely illustrated picture book, one of Amer...)
In this exquisitely illustrated picture book, one of America's foremost poets for young people describes the ongoing cycle of life. A seed sprouts and is quickly devoured by a bug. Then a bright green frog appears and makes a meal of the bug. And the story goes on...from bug to snake to hawk to hunter...until a seed begins to sprout. This wonderful poem deftly deals with a sensitive subject and is inventively illustrated by a prodigiously talented young artist.

Aileen Fisher was born on September 6, 1906, in Iron River, Michigan, United States. She was the daughter of N.E. Fisher and Lucia Milliken Fisher. She had three sisters, L.P. Fisher, Lucia Baker, Beth F. Sturdy.
Following graduation from high school, Aileen Fisher left Iron River to attend the University of Chicago for two years and then in 1925 transferred to the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1927.
From 1928 to 1931 Aileen Fisher directed the Women’s National Journalistic Register in Chicago, followed by a year working as a research assistant at the Labor Bureau of the Middle West. In 1932, wanting to retreat from the city, Fisher moved to Boulder, Colorado, to become a freelance writer. In 1933 she published her first book, The Coffee-Pot Face, a collection of poetry.
Fisher used her books to share with children her appreciation of animals and nature. Skip (1958) relates the story of a dog that loses its sight. Going Barefoot (1960) details a child’s observation of the natural world. I Like Weather (1963) gives the reader reasons to enjoy every season. Listen, Rabbit (1964) shows what happens when a young boy tries to keep a rabbit as a pet, and Rabbits, Rabbits (1983) illustrates the animal’s characteristics. The acclaimed Valley of the Smallest: The Life Story of a Shrew (1966) shows the tiny mammal’s struggle to survive in nature.
Fisher’s other notable books include Up the Windy Hill (1953) and Where Does Everyone Go? (1961). Later titles include Always Wondering (1991), Trapped by the Mountain Storm (1992), The Story of Easter (1997), and You Don’t Look Like Your Mother (2001). Children across the United States selected their favorite Fisher poems for the anthology I Heard a Bluebird Sing (2002). Fisher has also contributed to publications such as Child Life, Jack and Jill, and Story Parade.

Quotations:
"Poetry is a rhythmical piece of writing that leaves the reader feeling that life is a little richer than before, a little more full of wonder, beauty, or just plain delight."
"To assume a cat's asleep is a grave mistake. He can close his eyes and keep both his ears awake."
Aileen Fisher was an ardent mountain climber and liked to collect unusual bits and pieces of wood from old stumps and fragments of weathered wood, which she then fashioned into ornamental pieces. She was also a skillful carpenter, building her home on the ranch and designing and making the furniture within it. Later she also purchased old homes and renovated them.
Aileen Fisher didn't have her own family.
